[#041] My First Billion: living above the line

My three youngest started schoolthis week, which is reshaping my days.

My goal going forward is to be done with work by 2pm.

That way if I’m going to pick up RyPie (Ryan, my 6 year old, but that’s my name for him) from school or if he’s catching the bus, I can be present

The way my mornings are now structured, I got back into reading.

The Goal: 30 minutes every morning (and 30 more at night, ideally).

I used to have an ego-driven goal of reading a book a week.

It was about quantity.

Now my information diet is much more strategic.

I’ve mainly been studying the Bible.

Books outside of that have to be intentional, and I don’t force myself to have to be reading anything.

Right now, I'm in Bill Winston's Revelation of Royalty.

And my goodness, let me tell you lol

Yesterday I read something that I’m still processing.

He talked about living above the line and living below the line.

In short…

Above the line is the spiritual realm.

The infinite.

Ruled by faith (the ultimate currency).

By an image of yourself built off of your true identity... as son or daughter of a Royal Family.

Where the unseen is more powerful than the seen.

Below it is the natural realm.

The finite.

Ruled by human logic, human reason, an image of yourself built off of what you can see and count.

He says below the line is where all the toil lives.

Sweat, guesswork, survival, scarcity, anxiousness, striving, trial and error… that "I hope this works" feeling.

Then he drops this:

Sheesh!

The water bill

Then he tells this story…

A man calls a preacher and tells him God said to trade houses. You take mine, I'll take yours.

The preacher ignores it. Figures it's a prank.

Two weeks later the man calls back in a panic. He's not letting it go.

So the preacher drives out there. Big gate. The property runs 150 yards to the porch.

Inside the house there's a waterfall running over onyx stone. The place is magnificent.

The owner walks him through the whole thing and says, let's go to the title office.

You give me yours, I give you this one.

Ready?

And the preacher pauses…

"How much is the water bill?"

The man had to talk him into accepting a free mansion.

Not because he couldn't afford it. Because he couldn't see himself living in it.

His image of himself was smaller than the thing being handed to him.

Where I keep seeing this

I've been working with business owners as a consultant for over 15 years now.

And I watch this exact thing happen with the business.

The opportunity is right there in front of them… and they're standing at the gate doing math on the water bill.

Can I really charge that?
Can I really run ads at that spend?
Who's gonna pay me that?
What about the taxes if I make that?
What about the trolls on my content?
How much is that software?

What I’ve found is that most business owners don’t have a strategy problem.

They have an image problem.

It’s not that they don’t know what to do. They just don’t see themselves as the person that can do it AND have the life that can come as a result.

And I say that as somebody who has spent his whole career teaching strategy and building systems.

Systems and strategy matter.

I'm not about to tell you otherwise.

But the system doesn't set the ceiling.

You will not out-strategize how you see yourself.

What I'm taking into next week

Not a new tactic.

A higher awareness of where I slip below the line (because I do) and how long I stay there.

RyPie’s bus is almost here, so I’ll leave you with the question I'm sitting with…

Where are you asking about the water bill?
