[#043] My First Billion: what's your enough number?

I write a newsletter called My First Billion, so what I'm about to say is going to sound a little strange coming from me.

Chasing more is moving most people further from the thing they actually want.

Had a conversation with one of my coaches this week and part of the conversation was about having an enough number.

Nobody picks a number

Ask a business owner what they want and you get one word.

More.

More leads, more clients, more revenue, another zero.

More than what?

Or what’s the exact number?

Most people can’t answer that.

And when there's no finish line anywhere on the field, more becomes the default by accident.

Not because you chose it, but because nothing else was ever defined or you find yourself chasing someone else's goals.

So you build a business aimed at a target that doesn't exist... and a target that doesn't exist can't ever be hit.

That's why people cross seven figures and feel exactly how they felt at twenty thousand a month.

The line moved with them.

The program running underneath

Somewhere along the way most of us adopted the belief that life gets better when I have more money.

So when you get more money, since you believe life gets better when you get more money…

What do you do?

Go after more money.

And that loop continues.

So pick the number

Your enough number is the minimum you need to bring in every month to cover all your expenses and be comfortable.

Not the dream number or the number that sounds good at the mastermind.

This isn’t even the freedom number I’ve talked about.

The minimum that covers your life.

Then you optimize from there.

Say your number is 30k per month.

You hit it working eight hours a day.

Most people's next move is straight to "how do I get to sixty."

Mine is "can I make that same thirty working four hours?"

Same money, half the input.

Because I’m optimizing for freedom and more time with my wife and kids.

This is a big reason I have a 4 person team now vs. 42.

And why next month our CEO Camp for our advisory board members is for 12 clients, instead of 120 like it’s been in the past.

More team, a huge client roster and bigger events moves me further from what I want.

But that’s just me.

Now once you’re clear, you can raise the floor.

60k becomes the new minimum, not the new stretch.

Nobody's telling you to stay at enough.

Enough is the floor, and the floor is supposed to move because it helps you optimize for not having your worst month ever again.

But how it moves is the whole thing.

You raise it with...

→ the minimum amount of risk

→ the minimum amount of effort

→ the maximum amount of options

Because you can accomplish more, accumulate more, put up a bigger number...

…and still end up further from what you wanted.

More is not automatically closer.

Because more has a cost

If what you want is freedom and time with your family, read these next words carefully…

→ hiring more people can move you further away

→ a million dollar launch can move you further away

→ a massive event can move you further away

None of that is bad. Just the game of life is about getting what you want.

And if you never named your number, you'll say yes to all of it...

Because when you have no target, more always looks like the answer.

For the record, we’re still building a portfolio of companies that do a billion per year.

However, I’m doing it on my terms, in the way I wanna do it.

I’m not hinging on it, my peace isn't waiting on it and my family isn't on hold until it shows up.

Once your enough number is covered, everything above it becomes what it was always supposed to be.

Options, not oxygen.

Tonight I'm heading to a high school football game with my Pastor, son and law and my nephew.

That's not a reward for hitting something. That's just what enough buys you...

Friday night under the lights! :-)

So what's your enough number?

How much do you actually need to make every month after the bills are paid, plus a little fun money?

If you can't say it out loud, that's the work for the weekend.

Tell those you love that you love them.
